My Fringe Picks – Katie Noonan:

Media, News & Blog My Fringe Picks – Katie Noonan

Katie2014 Fringe Ambassador, Katie Noonan, has put together a list of shows she’ll be checking out this Fringe!

A Viking Tale
Musical funny lady Jenny Wynter (An Unexpected Variety Show, Jenny Wynter’s Wonderland featuring Betty and the Betties) invites you to find your own inner warrior in this shamelessly silly one-woman rock opera about channeling the viking within.

A one woman rock opera about finding the warrior within – hell yes!!!

50 Shades Of Gay
From the Gold Buff of George Michael to the Brown Ruffled Clam of Sia, Ginger and Tonic will take you on a rip-roaring ride through all the colours of the rainbow! With their trademark humour, sharp moves and impeccable close-harmonies, Emma, Jane, Carena and Sheona will roll out 50 songs that bat for the other team, all sung a cappella!

50 songs that bat for the other team sung acapella – sounds FAB!

Paul McDermott – The Dark Garden
Paul McDermott, The man for whom the term ‘Hardcore Cabaret’ was coined, returns to Adelaide, the city of his birth, with The Dark Garden. See the master of comedy in a show drenched in beautiful songs and hilarious stories. The Dark Garden. What is it? Come and find out.

How could I not plug my predecessor’s gig! ;-) We also have a similar taste in musicians so it will be a fantastic band!

Shoo Shoo Baby: A Tribute To The Sister Of Swing
A night of swing, nostalgia and fun. Join us as the Elliott Sisters lead the lively Swing & Tonic to recreate the sounds of the height of the swing era. A musical journey through the greatest hits of The Andrews Sisters. Including favorites such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, Rum and Coca Cola and many more.

I had the pleasure of hearing the Elliot sisters sing and they are truly gorgeous!

Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo
Direct from London’s West End, meet Erth’s awesome prehistoric creatures at the DINOSAUR ZOO, from cute baby dinos to teeth-gnashing giants, all brought to life by sophisticated puppet design and electronics. A perfect mix of live entertainment, learning, daring and all-round-fun for the whole family! Ages 5+

Erth are one of my favourite Aussie companies – creating truly beautiful worlds for young spirits.

Mr Snot-bottom & The Curse of The Stinky Silly Zombie Babies.
Arrghhhh it’s the Zombie Babies!!! Can kids comedy super-star Mr. Snot-bottom duck dribble, dodge dummies and defeat diapers to save the planet from these terrifying toddlers!?

This name is just far too cool to not check out – my boys love it already!

A Little Less Conversation 2 – A Little More Less Conversation
Callan is back giving people what they want. MORE DANCING. Last years show was nominated for best comedy and lots of people went so let’s all have a sequel of that type of stuff.

I love Dave Callan…. seriously funny. AND the promo says ” It’s going to be stupid and amazing just like your face”… yep I am there.

The Kransky Sisters – Piece Of Cake
Watch out! The Kransky Sisters are bringing their brand new-baked show to town! From Abba to Pink Floyd and Beyonce to AC/DC, these three eccentric sisters with their eclectic mix of instruments including musical saw, tuba, old reed keyboard, and kitchen pots, have cooked up a very special sweet and sour serving of well known songs gleaned from their old wireless at home.

Well what is not it not to love about these delicious women from Esk!? I had a school camp at Esk in 1989 and I am really grateful that The Kransky Sisters have helped me move on from horrible memories of that town! I love these girls and count Christine and Annie as two of my favourite women … I really looked up to them as great and inspiring local artists when I was finding my feet.

Bogan Bingo – The Last Time
Their motto “We rock, we know” apparently says it all. Bogan Bingo claim to be the greatest game show of all time. Using a fusion of 80’s rock anthems, hilarious Aussie tributes and impromptu air guitar competition, its hard to argue as each night morphs into such an unforgettable experience.

Bogan – tick. Bingo – tick. Yep I am there.

Sally Whitwell and Marie Angel – Philip Glass and Michael Nyman
Prepare to swoon as ARIA-award-winning pianist Sally Whitwell and soprano Marie Angel serenade you in Elder Hall with works by Michael Nyman & Philip Glass. This casual cornucopia also features music from Amelie by Yann Tiersen and Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin.

2 fabulous Aussie musos doing 2 of my favourite composers + my very fave Elena Kats-Chernin – what more could you want!

The Gin Club
Over the past ten years, The Gin Club have established themselves as one of Australia’s most exciting bands, both through their studio albums as well as their inimitable live performances. Continually evolving from the traditional folk/country of their self-titled debut, The Gin Club’s seven person songwriting roster has developed a unique and distinctive style.

One of my favourite Aussie bands…. I grew up watching Ben busk in the Queen St Mall and now he and his band mates are making truly beautiful, engaging and transporting music.

Wheatshead Ukelele Collective: It’s Not Me It’s Uke
Uke better believe it!! We’re back! After three sell-out seasons, we’re ready to bash out more of your favourite classic (and not so classic) hits (and not so hits). Eight ukuleles, voluptuous vocals and harmonies, rock distortion and some fat-ass uke bass. You’re gonna wish uke were here!

Well ever since they came and played with me at the Speigeltent with The Captains a few years ago I have had a crush on this band ;-). And The Wheaty is my fave Radelaide pub!

Bel Canto Bowie
Each day, two Italian village girls skip down to the local church to attend choir, but their lives seem meaningless and they pray for something more. God presents to them in the form of a Bowie record.

This makes perfect sense to me – my singing school ethos of Bel Canto mixed with the genius of Bowie. I’m excited!
