Poster Design Competition

About the Adelaide Fringe Poster Competition

We were born 57 years ago (although we don’t look a day over 25) and we’ve grown up to become the Southern Hemisphere’s largest open access arts festival!

For 31 magical days and nights each year we completely take over Adelaide, her surrounding suburbs and even some regional areas of South Australia. The city pulses with creativity in every nook and cranny! In 2018 Adelaide is set to be Fringified once again as we reach for the stars to create a Fringe bigger and brighter than ever before - and we need your help!
The Adelaide Fringe Poster competition is as iconic as the festival itself. Each year since the birth of the festival, the Adelaide Fringe hero image has been a poster competition entry, with previous winners including artists such as Bronwyn Platten, Vytas Serelis, Driller Jet Armstrong, Sue Ninham, Michael Atchison, Pro Hart, Jonathon Oxlade and Jennifer Rimbault.

Whether you're a beginner with a great idea, or consider yourself a graphic design guru or an amazing visual artist, we want to see your expression of what makes the Fringe so…well, Fringey! Not only will the winning image receive the massive exposure of becoming the symbol of the 2018 Adelaide Fringe, but the winning artist will also receive a $2000 cash prize and free Fringe show registration if they'd like to host their own exhibition as part of the 2018 Adelaide Fringe.

The Brief

The Adelaide Fringe is the festival of the people. We are the biggest arts festival in the nation and continue to grow year on year…and everyone is welcome!

The Fringe is an open access festival and each year we celebrate thousands of diverse artists who perform in hundreds of glorious venues and delight the hundreds of thousands of loyal audience members for the whole month under starry skies on balmy nights. In 2018, the Fringe turns 58 and the opening aligns with the Lunar New Year cultural celebrations - it's going to be a right royal party!

Adelaide Fringe lights up the whole city, people flock here from around the world and we are the jewel in the crown of Australian arts festivals.

We are looking for a poster that aligns with our values: something that represents the playful, inclusive and cheeky spirit of the Adelaide Fringe.

Hot Tips for Creating Your Design

  • The winning design will need to demonstrate flexibility and be able to be used in a number of different ways. This includes being reproduced in different sizes as well as in monochrome (black and white). The design must be versatile and be able to be used in a number of creative applications including t-shirts, posters, program booklets, banner signage, FringeTIX box offices and even Adelaide Metro trams and buses.
  • If you use any images you haven't created yourself, you must own the copyright for the images or have permission to use them in your design.
  • If you're looking for some inspiration, you can view our past posters here.
  • Remember to treat the poster brief as a basic guide only. Thinking outside the box is encouraged.

Submitting Your Design

Your original design may incorporate a range of materials and mediums, but your final entry must still be a two-dimensional representation of these ideas. We ask that entries be submitted at a minimum of 300DPI at A3 size (297mm x 420mm) as a JPEG or PDF- no need to worry about crop or printing marks or bleed at this stage, we just want to see your poster! Should you be the winner, you will be required to provide a layered Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign version of your poster with a minimum resolution of 300DPI at A1 size (594mm x 841mm) or a scalable vector/EPS file - please keep this in mind when creating your submission, but don't worry too much about it as this stage.

The 2018 Adelaide Fringe logo will be added by Adelaide Fringe to the winner's artwork, however if you wish to show how the logo will be incorporated into your design, you may download it as a JPG here or an EPS here. The colours of the logo may not be altered.

Please note that Adelaide Fringe are not able to return any physical entries.
