Yippee Ki Yay Review by That Guy in The Foyer, John Doherty ★★★★ Presented by Richard Marsh. Main Theatre, Adelaide College of the Arts, Light Square 16-20, 22-27, 29 Feb, 1-5, 7-10 Mar at 7pm Richard Marsh’s “Yippee Ki Yay” is a brave, warm and genuinely funny portrayal of a young man’s relationship with himself, his wife, young children and life cleverly conveyed through the narrative of the 1988 action movie, Die Hard. Bruce Willis’ portrayal of the gruff off-duty policeman John McClane, who finds himself to be the only hope for a group of corporates rendered hostages by Hans Gruber and his gunmen who seize an LA skyscraper, is iconic and provides a fantastic framework for Marsh’s brilliant poetry. McClane is certainly an action hero from another era, a “shoeless Ulysses” with faults, particularly in the area of emotional vulnerability, and it is the connection Marsh makes between this and his own marital vulnerabilities that drives “Yippee Ki Yay” and affords the show such warmth and great value as insightful, entertaining theatre. AC Arts’ Main Theatre is a cavernous space with a steeply raked auditorium, not an easy venue for a solo act with a minimal set, but Marsh’s witty, cleverly metered poetry and rhyme, and lively stage presence more than make up for that! If the abundant chuckles and belly laughs from the multi-generational are anything to go by, Richard Marsh as an Adelaide Fringe hit on his hands! Well worth diverting one’s attention from The Garden and Gluttony “Yippee Ki Yay” is, indeed, “The best poetry action play you’ll see on stage today!” Go! See it! # Adelaide Fringe
